Why is it called an “Entrepreneurial Spirit?” Why not have an entrepreneurial attitude, look, or demeanor? Those would all work, but they would fail to capture the somewhat ethereal nature of those compelled to build something, from nothing. It’s a twinkle in the eye that comes from a mix of talent, optimism, drive, passion, and just a little magic. We are crazy, of course, but also a little clairvoyant, able to see a world where there is just one less problem in it because we have crafted our very own solution for it. We are romantics and dreamers as much as we are planers and doers. I was lucky enough to have a grandfather who never asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up or what job I wanted. Instead, he asked what I wanted to build and what I wanted to own. When other little girls envisioned themselves as ballerinas and astronauts, I fantasized about board rooms while listening to Earl Nightingale reading “What Every Young Person Should Know.” On cassette tape. Because I’m THAT old. I don’t think enough people are asked what they want to build, but I definitely know the world has plenty of problems waiting to be solved by someone *just* crazy enough to try. An entrepreneurial spirit is an incredible, otherworldly gift. And even if you’ve yet to let it take flight, those of us who know what to look for can already see a familiar twinkle in your eye.
